Abstract:

Understanding the vertical structure of air pollution is essential for advancing our knowledge of atmospheric dynamics, climate interactions, and human exposure in urban environments. Leveraging synergistic observations from ground-based lidar, satellite retrievals, and regional modelling, our lab work reveals previously unresolved layering phenomena—such as decoupled pollution layers and residual dust plumes, —that challenge current aerosol classification and satellite retrieval frameworks. I will discuss how these complex vertical patterns affect air quality monitoring, especially under mixed pollution scenarios typical of the Eastern Mediterranean. The presentation will also highlight our efforts to better understand satellite-derived aerosol– vs ground-based particulate matter (PM₂.₅ ) relationship and incorporate vertical information into next-generation retrieval algorithms. Our approach offers a new diagnostic lens for policymakers to identify hidden pollution threats, design more targeted mitigation strategies, and assess climate–pollution interactions with greater spatial and temporal precision.

In addition, I will reflect on recent interdisciplinary studies from my group that integrate remote sensing, machine learning, and in situ data to assess environmental exposure and urban vulnerability. These developments collectively push the boundaries of how we measure, model, and mitigate urban air pollution.
